Short History
Who we are
Alberta Keys began in 1980 as a project for the Alberta 75th Birthday
Commission. A book of 47 piano pieces by 17 Alberta composers was
the result. The company name comes from the title of this book,
Alberta Keys. We incorporated as a company in 1983 and published
three piano books, Rainbows, Freckles, and Charms, the following
year. In 1985 Alberta Keys published a book of songs, Whims, by
Western Canadian composers.
What we do
From 1985 to 1990, Alberta Keys published two or three titles each
year. In the years 1990 to 2000 the company was more active with
7 or 8 books and pieces of sheet music coming out each year.
Our composers now come from all parts of Canada. In addition to
works for young pianists and singers, we publish song cycles and
piano solos for concert artists. In 1995 the company started to
publish violin and piano collections and solos and ensemble music
for other string players. We added Violet Archer and Richard Johnston's
wind music.
Our Successes
Alberta Keys published the test piece Danse sauvage by Allan Gordon
Bell for the 1996 Esther Honen's International Piano Competition.
The Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto (RCM) has recognized
the excellence and suitability of our music by choosing many of
our published solos for their piano syllabus. These selections are
noted with * and the appropriate grade level. Conservatory Canada
(CC) has chosen many of our pieces for their piano syllabus as well,
also marked with * with a suitable grade level. Contemporary Showcase
(CS.), a national non-competitive festival of Canadian music, has
chosen most of our piano music for their syllabus as well.
Testimonials
Beautiful, finely crafted works,
the music reviewer in the Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Tempo
I'm so glad to see you're publishing or reprinting
so much of Violet Archer's music,
Ruth Kazden, Toronto teacher.
From its beginnings, twenty five years ago, Alberta
Keys has developed into a very important publisher,
from a review in ARMTA Tempo.
Alberta Keys, the very first publication, is an
important resource
according to Calgary piano teacher, Gladys Chan.
The music of Piano Connections is well chosen,
representative of the cultural heritage, interesting and organized
into clearly defined levels. Canadian works include composers who
are among the most important in our country: Jean Coulthard and
S.C. Eckhardt-Grammatte .... Scrupulously edited with fingerings
and performance directions are both wise and suggestive.
From review in Calgary Tempo
I am very pleased with the good quality and interesting
originality and Canadian sound ...
a satisfied teacher in Los Angeles, California.
