'Although improvisation is centuries old and once was an essential skill, it is an aspect of pianism that is no longer a standard part of the pianist's performance field and training regime.  However, it is making a comeback and classical pianists are now being asked to explore this style of personal compositional expression within the context of a conven-tionally notated score.

A case in point is Danse Sauvage  by Albertan composer Allan Gordon Bell, composed for the Esther Honens Calgary International Piano Competition of 1996. It is important because of its pianistic extension, pedagogical significance for the teacher and student, and entertaining performance value.'
